Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Essential for a Healthy Pregnancy


When it comes to having a healthy pregnancy, there are many things that a mother has to make sure she gets such as proper rest and prenatal care. However, one of the most essential things that are required for a healthy pregnancy is a healthy diet. A healthy diet should of course include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Nutritionists and medical experts suggest that a pregnant woman should consume at least 4-5 servings of vegetables a day. The suggested amount of fruit that a pregnant woman should eat is 3-4 servings a day.

                  Eating fresh fruits and vegetables will ensure that the woman gets enough vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin E, folic acid and potassium just to name a few. When a pregnant woman gets essential vitamins and minerals through good produce it helps to keep complications at bay. Complications that can arise from not eating enough fruits and vegetables are: gestational diabetes, high blood pressure and anemia just to name a few. They also help the pregnant woman to maintain a healthy weight, reduce muscle cramps and other discomforts. Fresh fruits and vegetables also provide the pregnant woman’s body with energy to maintain the pregnancy. Fresh fruits and vegetables also help in making sure the baby develops properly. While the baby is in the womb, it derives all of its nutrients to develop its body from the mother. Vitamins and minerals help the baby have a healthy weight at birth, reduce risk of birth defects such as spina bifida, and aide in proper development of organ systems.

                  Pregnant women should choose organic fruits and vegetables when available, as they are not laden with harmful pesticides unlike their conventionally grown counterparts. However, any produce that is consumed should be properly washed and stored to reduce risk of harm.
